Chocolate Peppermint Christmas Cookies

There’s just something magical about baking cookies on a chilly December night  especially when peppermint and chocolate are involved. These Chocolate Peppermint Christmas Cookies are soft, fudgy, and filled with cozy holiday flavor. Made with almond flour, oats, and a touch of cocoa, they’re both festive and secretly wholesome. I love how they come together quickly and fill the kitchen with that sweet minty scent. Whether you’re making them for a cookie exchange, a holiday movie night, or just because it’s Tuesday and cold out  these cookies are a must.

Method

1. Preheat the Oven and Prepare Your Baking Sheet

Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (180°C). This ensures the oven is hot and ready by the time your dough is mixed. While it heats up, line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This prevents sticking and makes cleanup easier.

2. Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine your dry ingredients  almond flour, rolled oats, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and sea salt. Stir them together thoroughly to make sure everything is evenly distributed. This step is important so that your leavening agents (baking soda and baking powder) are mixed well with the rest of the dry base.

3. Add the Wet Ingredients

Next, add your wet ingredients directly into the same bowl  crack in the eggs, pour in the melted butter (make sure it has cooled slightly), add the coconut sugar, and drizzle in the peppermint extract. Start with 1/2 teaspoon of extract if you’re unsure how strong you want the mint flavor  it’s easy to add more later, but hard to take it back. Use a spoon or spatula to stir everything together until a thick, even cookie dough forms.

4. Fold in the Chocolate Chips

Once your dough is smooth and well combined, gently fold in the dark chocolate chips. These add bursts of melty chocolate goodness throughout the cookies. You can add more or less depending on how chocolatey you want them to be, but about 1/3 cup is a good place to start.

5. Shape the Cookies

Using a cookie scoop or your hands, portion out the dough and place it on your prepared baking sheet. Make sure to space the cookies out slightly  they won’t spread too much, but they do need room to bake evenly. You can gently press down the tops if you want a flatter cookie, but it’s not necessary.

6. Bake the Cookies

Place the tray into your preheated oven and bake the cookies for about 12 minutes. They should look set on the outside but still slightly soft in the center. That softness will firm up as they cool, giving you that perfect fudgy texture.

7. Cool Completely Before Dipping

Once the cookies are out of the oven, leave them on the tray for a few minutes to settle, then transfer them to a cooling rack (if you have one). Let them cool completely before moving on to the decorating step. This part is key  if the cookies are even a little warm, the white chocolate will slide right off when you try to dip them.

8. Dip and Decorate

When the cookies are fully cooled, melt your white chocolate in a small bowl. You can do this in short bursts in the microwave, stirring in between, or using a double boiler on the stove. Dip half of each cookie into the melted chocolate and then place them back on the parchment paper. Immediately sprinkle crushed candy canes over the dipped side while the chocolate is still wet, so they stick well.

9. Let the Chocolate Set

Leave the cookies at room temperature or place them in the fridge for a few minutes until the white chocolate hardens. Once set, they’re ready to eat, share, or gift.

  • Dark chocolate chips (about 1/3 cup or more if you’re feeling generous)

  • White chocolate (for melting and dipping)

  • Crushed candy canes (for topping)

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the almond flour, oats, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add in the eggs, melted butter, coconut sugar, and peppermint extract. Stir until everything forms a thick cookie dough.
  • Fold in the dark chocolate chips.
  • Scoop the dough onto your prepared baking sheet. You can use a cookie scoop or just roll them by hand.
  • Bake for about 12 minutes. The cookies will look a little soft in the center  that’s perfect.
  • Let them cool completely. This step is important, especially if you’re going to dip them.
  • Once cool, melt your white chocolate in a small bowl. Dip half of each cookie into the melted chocolate, then sprinkle crushed candy canes on top. Let them set before serving.

Notes

  • Don’t skip cooling the cookies before dipping warm cookies will melt the white chocolate right off.
  • Peppermint extract is strong, so start with 1/2 tsp and taste the dough before adding more.
  • Make sure the melted butter isn’t too hot when mixing, or you might scramble the eggs.
  • Crushed candy canes melt fast  don’t sprinkle them on until right after dipping, so they stick properly.

Serving Suggestions

These cookies pair perfectly with a glass of cold milk or a warm cup of peppermint hot cocoa. You can also box them up as homemade gifts or add them to a holiday cookie tray. I love serving them after dinner when the tree lights are glowing and everyone’s winding down.

Fun Fact

Peppermint has been a classic winter flavor for centuries. It’s not just refreshing  it also helps balance the richness of chocolate, which is why this combo works so well. Candy canes themselves date back to the 1600s in Europe, originally used to keep kids quiet during church!

Conclusion

These Chocolate Peppermint Christmas Cookies are everything I want in a holiday dessert  rich, festive, and super easy to make. They’re a little minty, a little chocolatey, and totally irresistible. Plus, decorating them with crushed candy canes is just plain fun.
